What Is GPS1?
GPS1 is the Gas Piping System Periodic Inspection Report created after a Local Law 152 inspection.
It documents the condition of your building’s exposed gas piping system and is prepared by a Licensed Master Plumber inspection entity following the inspection.
What Does the GPS1 Report Include?
A GPS1 report typically includes:
- Confirmation that the inspection was completed
- Areas of the building that were inspected
- Condition of exposed gas piping
- Identification of unsafe or hazardous conditions
- Notes on required repairs or corrections
This report provides a detailed snapshot of your system at the time of inspection.
Is GPS1 Enough for Compliance?
No.
GPS1 alone does NOT satisfy NYC DOB compliance requirements.
While GPS1 documents the inspection, the NYC Department of Buildings requires a GPS2 certification filing to confirm compliance.
Visit our Local Law 152 page for a full overview of requirements and deadlines.
Why GPS1 Still Matters
Even though it is not the official filing, GPS1 plays a critical role:
- Supports the GPS2 certification
- Documents system condition for records
- Helps identify safety concerns early
- Required if DOB audits your inspection
When Do You Receive GPS1?
After your inspection:
- Initial findings are often shared within 24 hours
- Full GPS1 documentation is provided within 30 days
What If Issues Are Found?
If conditions requiring correction are identified:
- Repairs must be completed within DOB timelines of 120 or 180 days from the date of the original inspection.
- A follow-up certification (GPS2) must be filed
- Failure to correct issues may result in violations
Common Misunderstanding
Many property owners believe:
“If I have a GPS1 report, I’m compliant”
This is incorrect.
Without a properly filed GPS2:
- Your building may still be non-compliant
- You may receive a DOB violation
