What Is GPS2?

GPS2 is the Gas Piping System Periodic Inspection Certification required under NYC Local Law 152.

This is the official filing submitted to the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) to confirm that your building is compliant.

Even if your inspection is completed, you are not compliant until GPS2 is properly filed.

Why GPS2 Matters

GPS2 is what the DOB actually tracks.

It confirms that:

  • Your gas piping system was inspected and no conditions requiring corrective action were observed.
  • Conditions requiring corrective action were addressed and a subsequent GPS2 was filed to confirm the conditions were corrected.
  • Your building meets Local Law 152 requirements

If GPS2 is:

  • Not filed
  • Filed incorrectly
  • Not tied to the correct building

You may receive a Failure to File violation, even if the inspection was completed.

Visit our Local Law 152 page for a full overview of requirements.

What Does GPS2 Certify?

A GPS2 filing confirms one of the following:

  • No conditions were observed.
  • Conditions were identified and will be corrected within the allowed timeframe of 120 or 180 days from the date of the original inspection.
  • Conditions were observed and corrected
  • The building does not contain gas piping (if applicable)

GPS2 Filing Deadlines

After your inspection:

  • GPS1 report → provided to the owner or owner’s representative within 30 days
  • GPS2 filing → must be submitted within 60 days
  • Corrections (if required) → typically within 120 or 180 days from the date of the original inspection.

Missing these deadlines can result in violations and penalties.

Common GPS2 Mistakes

We frequently see issues caused by:

  • Inspection completed but GPS2 never filed
  • Incorrect information on the filing (Block / Lot / BIN errors)

These issues can lead to violations even when the inspection itself was completed correctly.

How to Confirm Your GPS2 Was Filed

To ensure your building is compliant:

  • Ensure that the inspection entity verifies the filing by providing you with the filing confirmation email from the DOB
  • After filing, search your email for an email from donotreply@buildings.nyc.gov with the subject line Your Notification of Periodic Gas Piping Inspections form has been submitted to DOB.
  • Retain all documentation on file for at least 10 years

If you’re unsure, it’s important to confirm before deadlines pass.

What Happens If GPS2 Is Missing?

If GPS2 is not properly filed:

  • The DOB may issue a Failure to File
  • Civil penalties may apply ($1,500 or $5,000)
  • You may need to correct or re-file the certification

In many cases, these issues are administrative and can be resolved quickly if caught early before deadlines have passed.
