When Is My Building Due for a Local Law 152 Inspection?
It’s one of the most common questions we get: when exactly is my building due? The answer depends on one thing — your building’s NYC Community District. Not your zip code, not your borough, not your block number. Your Community District.
Local Law 152 operates on a four-year rotating cycle. Every NYC building that’s subject to the law falls into one of four groups, each assigned a specific year. Miss your year and you risk a DOB violation of up to $5,000 per Building Identification Number.
Here’s everything you need to know to find your deadline — and what to do once you have it.
Skip straight to the answer: Use our free address lookup tool to find your building’s Community District and deadline instantly. Enter your address and we’ll tell you exactly when you’re due.
The current Local Law 152 inspection schedule
We’re currently in Cycle 2, which runs from 2024 through 2027. Here’s the full schedule:
| Inspection Year | Community Districts | Filing Deadline |
| 2024 (completed) | 1, 3, 10 — all 5 boroughs | December 31, 2024 |
| 2025 (completed) | 2, 5, 7, 13, 18 — all 5 boroughs | December 31, 2025 |
| 2026 (current) | 4, 6, 8, 9, 16 — all 5 boroughs | December 31, 2026 |
| 2027 (upcoming) | 11, 12, 14, 15, 17 — all 5 boroughs | December 31, 2027 |
Each Community District number appears once per cycle. After 2027, the cycle repeats — buildings due in 2024 will be due again in 2028, those due in 2025 will be due again in 2029, and so on.
Already past your deadline? If your building was in a 2024 or 2025 community district and hasn’t filed yet, you are out of compliance. In January of 2026, the NYC DOB Issued Notices of Violation for Failure to File for 2024. If you are in non-compliance — contact us and we’ll help you understand your options.
What neighborhoods are due in each year
Community district numbers aren’t intuitive unless you work with them regularly. Here’s a neighbourhood-level breakdown so you can place your building without needing to look up a map.
2026 — Due by December 31, 2026
Community Districts 4, 6, 8, 9, and 16 in all five boroughs. In 2026 terms, that means:

Important: your Community District is not your zip code
This is the single most common source of confusion we see. Community Districts are a specific NYC administrative geography — 59 of them across the five boroughs — that don’t align with zip codes, school districts, council districts, or neighbourhood names as commonly used.
A building on the border between two neighbourhoods can easily be in a different Community District than a building two blocks away. The only reliable way to confirm is to look up your specific address.
Two ways to find your Community District:
- Fastest: Use our free address lookup tool — enter your building address and get the result instantly.
- DOB records: Search your building on the NYC DOB’s Buildings Information System (BIS) at https://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/bispi00.jsp — your Community District is listed on the property profile.
What if your building is on the Covered Buildings List?
The NYC DOB publishes an annual Covered Buildings List (CBL) — a spreadsheet of every property identified for Local Law 152 compliance in a given year. You can download it from the DOB’s Periodic Gas Piping System Inspections page at nyc.gov/buildings.
Being on the CBL confirms your building is required to comply. Not being on the list doesn’t necessarily mean you’re exempt — it can also mean your building’s records are misclassified. If you’re unsure whether your building is subject to the law, don’t rely on the CBL alone. Look up your Community District and confirm directly.
Think your building is misclassified? If your Certificate of Occupancy or HPD Historical Image Card shows your building is a 2-family but the NYC Department of Finance classifies it as a 3-family, you may be able to challenge the requirement. Log into DOB NOW → Safety → Violations → Challenge Request → Gas Piping and upload supporting documents. The DOB Plumbing Enforcement unit can assist at 212-393-2550.
What if my building has no gas?
You still have a filing obligation. Even buildings with no gas piping or no active gas service are required to file documentation with the NYC DOB confirming that status. There are two scenarios:
- Building with no gas piping at all: File a one-time Certification from a Licensed Master Plumber, Registered Design Professional or with documentation from the utility for No Gas Piping System through DOB NOW: Safety. Under 2026 rules, this true no-piping certification only needs to be submitted once — it does not need to be refiled every cycle. The fee is $375 per BIN.
- Building with gas piping but no active gas service: File Documentation of No Gas Service — either a certification from a Licensed Master Plumber or documentation from the utility. The fee for this filing is $480 per BIN.
Failure to file in either case carries the same civil penalty as failure to inspect — up to $5,000 per BIN. We handle both of these filings for building owners.

Can you get an extension?
Yes. A DOB Service Notice provides for an automatic 180-day extension during any year in any cycle. If your building is due by December 31, 2026, you can extend to June 28, 2027 by filing an extension request. Extensions are $35 per BIN.
Extensions are useful if you need more time to schedule the inspection or complete corrections identified during a prior inspection. They do not eliminate the compliance obligation — they just shift the deadline. KeepMyGas will assist you, complimentary, with the process to execute an extension.
Important: Extension requests must be filed before the original December 31 deadline passes. You cannot file for an extension on a deadline you’ve already missed.
What happens after you know your deadline
Once you’ve confirmed your Community District and deadline, here’s the sequence:
- Get a quote. Contact KeepMyGas with your building address and we’ll confirm the scope and give you an upfront price before anything is scheduled.
- Schedule early. Inspectors book up — especially in Q4. The 2026 amendments added a mandatory 2-business-day DOB pre-notification to every inspection booking, which means the scheduling window is tighter than it used to be. Mid-year scheduling avoids the year-end crunch.
- Coordinate access. Make sure the inspector will have access to all required areas — common areas, basement, boiler room, and as of February 22, 2026, any commercial spaces in the building.
- Complete the inspection and receive the results. The results will be documents for you in DOB NOW: Safety and you will have perpetual access to the record.
- File the Initial Certification with the DOB. The Initial Certification must be filed within 60 days of the date of inspection.
For inspections that have conditions to correct the filing with the DOB of the Initial Certification is followed by a Certification of Corrected Conditions.
These are the filing that actually close out your compliance obligation. An inspection without a Certification filing is not compliant. KeepMyGas handles this filing for you.
